October 24 - As we think about our upcoming Vocabulary Monday, tell me what is your favorite word RIGHT NOW? Why is it your faovorite word and how often do you use it?

Prompt Response: We have been assigned many words since the course has started. Out of all those words, I think cessation might be my favorite. It’s easy to connect into a sentence. It’s not a big word but it still sounds pretty fancy and professional. It isn’t complicated like other words. I feel like if you taught it to someone else, they’d remember the word and definition easily. It’s one of those words you could use on the daily bases like any other word without people having to tell you it’s “too much.” Summary: Today in class, we worked on the project. Reflection: I learned how to rethink about childhood memories.

October 22 - In “Birches,” Robert Frost celebrates imagination as a way to escape life’s difficulties and reconnect with innocence. The speaker wishes to “get away from earth awhile” but also understands that he must eventually return to reality. Think about the role of imagination in your own life. How does imagination help you cope with challenges, boredom, or stress?

Prompt Response: Imagination has always been a big part of how I deal with stress in high school. Whenever life feels overwhelming like during tests and finals, I like to imagine myself somewhere peaceful. I let my mind relax and wander to distract me from all the stress. Like the speaker in Birches, I know I can’t escape reality forever, but using my imagination gives me a short beak that helps me come back stronger and more confident. Summary: Today in class, we analyzed a poem. Reflection: Today I learned how to celebrate imagination.

October 21 - After reading “Out, Out—” by Robert Frost, reflect on a time when you faced a dangerous or high-pressure situation that demanded your complete focus. What made the situation risky, and how did your concentration affect the outcome?

Prompt Response: A time I faced a high-pressured situation was during a big presentation. Our group counted for a huge part of our grade, and I was responsible for starting the presentation. Our group was the first up. Usually I like going second or third because you get an idea of how it should go. As soon as we got up to present, the computer lost connection and I could feel my heart racing. I took a deep breath and tried to speak out as much as I remembered from the slide. From that moment, I learned to stay calm no matter how bad things are falling apart. Summary: In class we analyzed a poem called Out Out by Robert Frost Reflection: Today I learned that life can change within the blink of an eye

October 20 - Write about what you did over the Fall Break.

Prompt Response: Over the break, I hung out with my friends. I didn’t go anywhere special. I got to stay home and just relax. I helped around the house and worked on any work I had to do. I took care of my baby nephew a few days out of the week. I planned to go to the Daniel Caesar pop up concert. I was mad when I found out it got cancelled because I was already an hour in traffic. I had to force myself to stay in the area and do other activities with my friends.  Summary: Today in class, we worked on a comic strip using vocabulary words. Reflection: Today I learned new vocabulary words.

October 10 - How do you find time to enjoy your day, even when you have a lot going on? Write about at least three specific things you do to enjoy small moments throughout your day.

Prompt Response:  When I want to enjoy my day and still get work done, I like to plan ahead. I write what I have to do on an agenda to get everything done faster. When it's a lot of work, I take small breaks in between or I get it all done at once to get it over with, and enjoy the rest of my day with no worries. I like to organize everything I have planned so I can get things done easily and not have to worry about what I could possibly be forgetting about. Even with a busy schedule, I always find ways to make time for myself. Summary: Today in class, we finished working on our argumentative paragraphs on Writable. Reflection:  Today I learned how to properly identify the parts of an argumentative paragraph.

October 9 - Describe a time when someone’s words had a lasting impact on you.

Prompt Response:  For me, it all happened two years ago. My teacher gave me advice on how to be better. She told me that success and failure weren't opposites. Instead, failure was a phase to succeed. It really stuck to me because I always viewed both success and failure as opposites. What she said made sense though, because you can't succeed without making a few mistakes. Summary: Today in class, we continued to work on our argumentative paragraph Reflection:  I learned how to properly start a claim.

October 7 - Write about a moment when you had to step out of your comfort zone.

Prompt Response:  I consider myself a quiet person when it comes to new people. I always keep to myself and never get into other people's business. One day on the bus, I saw some kids throwing stuff at others on the bus. I was going to mind my own business until they started throwing pencils at my friends. I told her to pass me everything they had thrown, and I threw it all back. I yelled at them and told them to stop. I felt embarrassed because the bus went silent and I could feel everyone staring. The entire ride home was awkward and quiet. Summary: Today in class, we read "Ambush" on writable.  Reflection:  Today I learned how to start an argumentative paragraph in second person.

October 6 - Write about a dream that felt real.

Prompt Response:   One night, I had a dream about getting stuck in a room full of snakes. I have a big phobia of snakes and other animals with the same texture. I hate how they slither. This dream took place in the forest. I was running away from a loud, deep noise. I ran and ran until I got to a small shed. It was dark and silent. I looked for a light switch to turn on the lights. When I finally found the switch, I saw thousands of snakes crawling and slithering on the walls and roof. I woke up in horror. Not only was it scary but disgusting. Summary: Today in class, we did a newsela assignment. Reflection: Today I learned how to annotate a passage.

October 3 - Write about something you’ve always been curious about.

Prompt Response:  I have always been curious about how art can express emotions words cannot. There are paintings or melodies that could make a person cry or bring comfort without saying a single thing. How does it have the ability to embody it. Unlike words, which explain emotion, art is like its physical form. Art speaks directly to the senses. It speaks through color and rhythm, whenever words fail. Could art create new emotions? Does art reflect emotions already within us?  Summary: Today in class, we worked on our argumentative paragraph Reflection:  Today I learned how to identify the parts of an argumentative paragraph.

September 30 - Write about a conversation that changed you.

Prompt Response:  A conversation that changed me was that failure isn't the opposite of success, but a process to getting there. During a semester, I had trouble getting my grade up in a class. I sat down with her during a meeting. She explained to me that success is built on learning from mistakes. It's better to try and fail, then to do nothing at all. By viewing those mistakes as lessons, I began to approach challenges with patience instead of panic. This helped improve both my confidence and performance. This new mindset helped me correct my errors and complete assignments throughout the school year. This showed me that resilience defines real growth, not perfection. Summary: Today in class, we worked on a claim and evidence worksheet. Reflection:  Today I learned how to find evidence for a claim using an article.

September 29 - Write about something that you believed as a child.

Prompt Response:  Something I believed as a kid was any made up story about getting money if you put a tooth under your pillow. Whether it was the tooth fair or a rat. I believed it all. Whenever I had a loose tooth, I would get excited about taking it out. The sooner I got it out, the sooner I'd have a few dollars under my pillow the following morning. I used to watch a lot of cartoons with scenes where the tooth fairy would appear and leave cents under the main character's pillow. Shout out to my mom for actually making it happen though. She made sure I woke up with 5 dollars under my pillow every time. That's the only reason I continued to believe the tooth fairy existed.  Summary: Today in class, we worked on a new set of vocabulary words. Reflection:  Today I learned new vocabulary.

October 1 - Write about the best gift you have received.

Prompt Response:  In 7th grade, I used to bother my family and friends about exotic animals. Since elementary school, I've had an obsession with animals that were not normally kept as pets. So before my 12th birthday that year, I begged to get a ferret. It didn't have to be a birthday gift. The goal was just to own one for myself. My birthday came around but my gifts weren't anything out of the blue. I got clothes, phone accessories, and jewelry. Before the party ended, my mom walked in with an extra gift in her hands. When I opened it, I saw the whitest, fluffiest ferret. I was left speechless and after a while, I jumped in excitement. I screeched and ran to her, giving her a hug. I named him KoKo and I've had him for about 4 years now and I hope for more to come.  Summary: Today in class we started on our argumentative paragraph on Writable. Reflection:  Today I learned the steps to starting an argumentative paragraph.
