December 2 - In “We Real Cool,” the speakers make choices that seem exciting, bold, and rebellious, even though those choices lead to consequences. Write about a moment in your own life when you followed what looked cool or fun, only to realize afterwards that it wasn’t the smart or responsible path. What influenced your decision, and how did your perspective change later?
Prompt Response: One time a group of my friends started skipping. They made it sound exciting, like we were breaking some huge rule and getting away with it. I didn’t even really want to skip, but I didn’t want to be the only one who stayed behind and looked “uncool,” so I went along with them. At first it felt fun. Just walking around, laughing, and pretending we were rebels. But later, when I got home and realized I had missed important notes and that my teacher had marked me absent, it didn’t feel cool at all. I felt stressed and guilty, and I knew I had only gone because I didn’t want to seem boring or left out. Looking back, I can see how easy it is to get caught up in what looks exciting in the moment, especially when friends are involved. But I also learned that the consequences always catch up, and it’s not worth risking your own responsibilities just to impress other people.
Summary: Today in class we read the poem “We Real Cool”
Reflection: Today I learned about how wanting to seem cool can make you someone you’re not.
