September 26 - Write about a fear you have overcome.

Prompt Response:  When I was little, I had a huge fear of roller coasters. I would pass on going to places like SixFlags and the fair. The only reason I was scared of them was because of the accidents that were transmitted on the news. One day my siblings tricked me into going. They said we would be going to the zoo, but instead we ended up at SixFlags. We started off with the smallest rides to get me used to the rides since it was my first time on them. The first one wasn't even big and I kid you not, I passed out on it. When the ride was over, I realized it wasn't as bad as I thought It would be. The helped me build courage for the bigger rides. Summary: Today in class, we identified claims in a passage. Reflection:  Today I learned how to organize my classes for college.

September 24 - As you grow older and face new experiences, what issue or topic do you think you'll have to stand up and debate most often, whether with friends, family, or society?

Prompt Response:  A topic that I think I'll have to stand up or debate most often, with society, is social justice. Whether it's human rights, free speech, or equality. I'll always be in favor of these. Political views like presidents and government, not so much. And though they're really important, I'd rather not speak about them because we all choose to believe what we want. I've always thought political views like these, were kinda like religions. Except religious beliefs provide a comprehensive moral and spiritual worldview, and politics focus on the organization of a society, but they both consist of beliefs. Religion and belief systems are also another topic I'll stand up for. We all have the freedom to choose our own paths. Summary: Today in class, we took notes on claims. Reflection:  Today I learned the different types of claims.

September 23 - Write about a truth you were afraid to accept.

Prompt Response:  Something I was afraid to accept was that no matter how much or what you do, you don't always get what you want. I used to be friends with this one girl last year. Our friendship was already broken but I did the impossible to keep our friendship. I would buy her gifts and go places, thinking it would make her feel better. It got to the point where I had to embarrass myself just to make her stay. I had other friends telling me I was dumb for letting her walk all over me. I later realized that it wasn't worth going through all that trouble for someone who didn't even want to be my friend. Though I was pretty hurt about the situation, I ended up dropping her.  Summary: Today in class, we took notes about the three types of rhetorical devices. Reflection:  Today I learned the difference between logos, pathos, and ethos.

September 22 - Write about a time when you were judged unfairly.

Prompt Response:  My freshman year, I was put into a class where I didn't know anyone. Everyone there seemed to get along very well. I looked forward to going to every class, but that one. I barely talked in the class, unless it was necessary. One day, our teacher put us into groups of 4. Everyone in my group divided the work equally, but left me with the least work. I tried giving them ideas because I didn't want them thinking I was leaving them with everything, but they ignored me or looked at me weird. At some point I was told by one of them, that I didn't look like the type to take stuff like that seriously. While it did hurt me a little, I didn't say anything back and stayed quiet after that. They judged me based on how quiet I was, not my ethical work and ability.  Summary: Today in class, we completed a Common Lit assignment. Reflection:  Today I learned about what fear can teach us.

September 19 - Imagine you are learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the very first time. What would you be curious to know about the traditions, foods, music, or celebrations?

Prompt Response:  If I was learning about Hispanic/Latino heritage for the first time, I’d want to know about the origin. As a hispanic, our culture is very diverse. Our people don’t always appear the same. We have afro-latinos, tan-skinned, sometimes there’s people who have colored eyes and light hair, and others have slim eyes like the ones asians inherit. For example, white/caucasians almost always have the same features. Fair skin, colored eyes and light hair. So I would want to know where it all really began. Could it be results to years of interracial interactions?  Summary: Today in class, we took notes on how to write a thesis statement.  Reflection:  Today I learned to define things that were overrated.

September 16 - In “The Interlopers” by Saki, Ulrich and Georg view each other as interlopers, outsiders intruding on their land and their lives. Think about a time when you felt like an interloper or when someone else felt out of place in your world. How did that situation affect relationships, emotions, or outcomes?

Prompt Response:  Sometimes I feel like an interloper whenever I go to parties. I feel like an outsider when it comes to new people. For example, if I’m with a friend and they ran into their friend group, I’d awkwardly stand there instead of interacting with them. I have trouble socializing or sometimes I put on a mask and act like someone totally different. It starts to make me aware of my actions. I think moments like these can affect relationships. It creates a distance because you start to feel misunderstood or assume others are judging you. I’m never fully engaged due to that. Summary: Today in class, we did a CommonLit assignment. Reflection:  Today I learned what it’s like to be an interloper.

September 17 -After viewing your classmates’ poem posters, select one presentation that caught your attention. Describe what you enjoyed about it or something new you learned from their work.

Prompt Response:  After viewing all of my classmates' poem posters, I thought everyone’s was creative. I liked the one about making good spaghetti the most. I’m pretty sure it was by Elliot. But It really caught my attention because it talked about how you don't have to play by the book to find yourself. The poem had almost nothing to do with the actual topic of being yourself, but it still gave great themes. The poster itself was very detailed and creative. The poem's structure was really good as well. It contained a lot of detail and I was able to understand it pretty well. The extended metaphor was compared to something irrelevant, but yet it still made sense.  Summary: Today in class, we presented our poem posters. Reflection:  Today I learned how to brainstorm and the steps in the writing process.

September 15 - Of today’s 15 vocabulary words, which three do you think you will use the most in your speaking and writing this semester? Explain why each word feels useful or powerful to you.

Prompt Response: Out of all 15 vocabulary words, I think I will be using adulterate, affectation, and aesthetic the most. I chose these 3 words because their pronunciation sounds satisfying. I already use the word aesthetic a lot. Even when I'm with my friends. When we take pictures and they come out good, we say they look aesthetic. Affectation is basically a fancier word for fake. So instead of calling someone fake, you would they're filled with affectation and they'd probably look at you confused, especially if they don't know the meaning of the word. When we use the word adulterated, we're sometimes referring to drugs or mixed substances. But, instead of just using those, you could say adulterated substances to make you sound more professional. Summary: Today in class, we worked on a workbook. Reflection:  Today I learned a new set of vocabulary words.

September 12 - It’s Homecoming Week! 🎉 What do you love most about being part of the Lakeside community? How do you show off your school spirit? What is your favorite Homecoming tradition or event?

Prompt Response: Something I like about being part of the Lakeside community is that everyone is really positive and dedicated to their education. The teachers are always supportive and understanding as well. I show my school spirit by participating in most of spirit week themes and going to the games. My favorite event is the pep rally. I like how competitive the students get during the mini game. I also like the dance. You get to see your friends and dance. I think the best part about it is dressing up and taking pictures. Picking out the theme is also fun. I always try matching my dress with it. Summary: Today in class, we took an assessment. Reflection: Today I learned how to work better on Adobe.

September 8 - After reading Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem "Constantly Risking Absurdity," which explores the poet's daring craft, write about your most absurd personal experience. Describe a single, specific incident that felt ridiculously bold or foolish. Ensure your response is vivid, concise, and captures the essence of absurdity.

Prompt Response: When I was first learning how to roller skate, I taught myself how to do a few simple tricks then and there. They weren’t the cool ones you would see on the internet. After all I was still too little and too scared to attempt to do anything crazy. One day, I built up the courage to try something new. Keep in mind that around this time I was about 7. Little kids always get tempted to do crazy things. The day before I watched someone spin into a backwards skate. I started off slow on the concrete and I gradually began to go a little faster. I managed to pull off the spin, but as soon as I turned to skate backwards, my heel got caught on a crack, causing me to fall and shatter my tailbone.  Summary: Today in class, we analyzed a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Reflection: Today I learned about absurdity and how it can drive people to take risks just to prove a point.

September 9 - Which aspect of creating a poem do you enjoy the most? Tell what it is and explain why.

Prompt Response:  I enjoy rhyming the most. It really requires you to think and be creative. As you're reading the poem it sounds like a song lyrics and it's really satisfying to say. I listen to music a lot, rap to be exact, so as you're reading it, it sounds like you're free styling a verse. Sometimes it doesn't always have to be the last word to rhyme. It can be any other word in the line. It could even be the first letter. I find it easier to connect to a poem that rhymes because they sound a lot more interesting. Rhyming helps dictate how the poem flows. Summary: Today in class, we started working on our own poem. Reflection: Today I learned how to find a title to my poem, while still relating to the poem's topic.

September 10 - Which learning method do you enjoy the most? Class discussions, worksheet work, or hands-on actvities. Select one and tell why.

Prompt Response: As someone who sometimes has a hard time taking in information, I like hands-on activities. This helps me get a better understanding of things because as I'm working, I start to understand how everything works. I'm not a great listener when it comes to lessons in class because I get bored and start to zone out. So, hands-in activities really keep me distracted and occupied. Through these kinds of activities, I learn from experimenting and creating. They provide direct knowledge and foster a deeper understanding. I'm able to build connections between ideas and real-life situations. I can also learn from my mistakes and learn new things. I feel like when activities are physical, you're more likely to remember the information.  Summary: Today in class, we worked on a visual poster for our poem. Reflection: Today I learned how to create an animated character on Adobe

September 5 - You are currently working on a soundtrack for selected Emily Dickinson poems. With that in mind, if asked to choose a song to describe your life right now, which song would you select and why?

Prompt Response:  A song that would describe my life right now is “Fix You” by Coldplay. The song revolves around empathy and hope, so it aligns with someone who is deeply empathetic and sensitive. The lyrics talk about someone who is trying to help someone who is struggling. I consider myself helpful and empathetic when it comes to others. I always try to help and listen to what they may be going through. Even though I can’t always help fix everything, I still put in effort to make everything better for them. I’m always open to anyone who is in need of emotional support and healing. In the song, the speaker’s desire is to help someone who is struggling and fix them.  Summary: Today in class, we took an assessment. Reflection:  Today I learned how to look at my test score on Illuminate.

September 3 - If you were to compose a poem about one aspect of your life, which topic would it fall into and what would your overall life's message be?

Prompt Response:  If I were to compose a poem about one aspect of my life, it would fall into the concept of time. Time is a universal concept, but it’s also personal. It shapes many of my experiences, it defines my memories, and gives meaning to my actions. Memories from birth to up til now. It could be a reflection of the past but also a look into the future. It’s essential to my story because it’s what holds its structure. It shapes my whole existence. It’s the gap between the person I was then versus now. A poem could personify time as a force that sharpens your patience. My overall life’s message would be that all moments are connected. Summary: Today in class, we worked on our sound track. Reflection:  Today I learned how to connect songs with poems.

September 2 - You’ve been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. How has the class been going for you so far?

Prompt Response:  I've been in American Literature for 4.5 weeks now. So far, I'm actually enjoying the class and usually literature isn't my thing. I find engaging in the topics a lot easier this year. At the moment, I've liked our poetry unit the most because we really think deep when it comes to analyzing these pieces. I feel like accelerated is right about my level. I've always found general literature classes being taught at a slow pace and boring. We discuss a lot more and go in deeper into the topic. It might be one of my favorite classes so far.  I can't wait to see what else awaits me, in this course. Summary: Today in class, we analyzed another Emily Dickinson poem. Reflection:  Today I learned to not waste my time worrying about when death will come.
